TRAVEL TIPS

Getting Here and Around

You can reach the Arbat via the Arbatskaya, Smolenskaya, and Biblioteka Imeni Lenina metro stations. Novy Arbat is an enormous avenue packed with traffic and therefore not very pleasant to walk along; it's best to have a specific destination in mind if going there. It’s easy to get lost in the side streets off Stary Arbat, but you inevitably make your way to a recognizable major thoroughfare, whether it's back to Stary Arbat, to Novy Arbat to the north, the Garden Ring on the western edge, or ulitsa Prechistinka to the south, which is another spoke heading southwest from the Kremlin.

Timing

You can easily spend a whole day exploring the Arbat, especially if you go souvenir shopping at the shops and street kiosks you'll see along the way. There are numerous charming side streets just off the Old Arbat and plenty of cafés to stop in for a break. If you want to avoid crowds, check this neighborhood out on a weekday; the pedestrian zone in the Old Arbat, in particular, draws big crowds on the weekends. The museums in this neighborhood are all fairly small; you'll need no more than an hour for each of them.
